Saw the fantastic “Turner and the Sea” exhibition in Greenwich recently, and was so inspired thought I’d try and copy one of his. So here’s my “Fighting Temeraire”
It was good to do this, learnt a lot. Mainly how good Turner was! I was quite happy with it though, especially the sea, which I felt I managed to blend and flatten quite well. Turner must have applied literally 10’s of layers to get his finished result.
Famously this picture, although based on a real event, was primarily fictionalised. The Temeraire was being pulled up the Thames, and Turner was sailing down, so would only have seen this view for 10 minutes. The main problem is that the sun would not have been setting behind the ship at all – we are looking East. Also the ship had already been de-masted.
