My work explores architecture and urban landscapes, from iconic London landmarks to small Cornish harbours. I make photo-collages, combining several different viewpoints in the same picture, referencing cubism, surrealism and faux-naivety. This playful approach extends to my materials, using collage and mixed media, creating texture in the piece. Figures are captured interacting with the architecture, often in humorous ways – sometimes from observation, sometimes from childhood memories of days out and holidays.
My most recent series explores London galleries, and captures some of the new innovations and changes, and some thoughts (in a playful way) about their use and abuse.
The pictures evoke memories of places, journeys and forgotten feelings. You feel the emotion of the piece before you think about it consciously.
My technique involves working from heavily collaged boards, including materials found on site. I apply materials appropriate to the texture of the subject – acrylic paint or ink, pen, pencil, oil pastels, graphite. I make the transitions visible – mark-making with all sorts of objects, to inject energy and action to the image. It is important to me the viewer can understand how the picture was put together. I do not believe in Artist’s ‘magic’, rather that anybody can be an Artist, and my chosen process supports and demonstrates that to be true.
I take strong inspiration from other artists who have worked to similar ends. From Alfred Wallace in particular, up to Rose Wylie and Tom Hammick working today.
I am also interested in change, both personal and societal growth. My images, initially appearing as traditional subjects, reveal themselves through closer inspection in layers, abstract areas of shape and colour, sometimes one thing and sometimes another. These layers correspond to your memories of the past. Always changing but hazy, inconsistent.
